Tired of Christmas chaos
12/26/2007 5:48:24 AM

Well, I survived another Christmas. If only it was just about being happy about a little boy child being born, if only it was to recognize that the Christ child was born but no...It is not at all about that, not now. Now it is all about shops making loads of money. It is about advertising and of peer pressure, of trying to meet someone's illusions of unachievable media expectation of perfection. I can't do it...I want to get out of it but like so many Ordinary suburbanites, I am snagged by the ever expanding trap of late December Chaos. Did I enjoy Christmas day?Yes, it was beautiful, a banquet, abundance of everything excellent, loving family ,thoughtful gifts, amazing food with all the trimmings...who would not enjoy that?
But, has anyone noticed that Santa is more important than Jesus...has anyone noticed that Christ is missing from Christmas oh so very very often? I just look and see all the rush and stress to get things right, painfully, society keeps striving to get it perfect and we seem to do it but....is it really what we are supposed to be doing?
I saw an frail old man walking down the road carrying a green plastic garbage bag and wearing no shoes in an old worn jumper on Christmas Eve,he looked so poor. I saw two teenagers on the train on the 23rd of December ;I heard them say they had only ten dollars to get them through Christmas, they had no hope to buy anything for anyone, hardly enough for themselves to survive. They were young and looked so sad. I saw our Australian soldiers on our local news television station sending Christmas greetings to loved ones, they were stuck in far off war-torn countries, their eyes looked afraid and lonely. Why do I have a perfect Christmas when they have so little of Christmas? Why can't we just all have peace, why can't we all have the harmony that the little babe wanted for us? There is no need for that big jolly man in the red suit...or the silver tinsel on the fancy big green tree...there is no need for boxes with bows and stockings full of goodies and gifts.
There is only
a need to pause and to ask
what it is all about? This special day,Christmas day,is just to look for the answer to why he came,it is to sit and to think and to ponder on the meaning of his birth...it is to realize that he came to help us find love and peace and to help us turn from war and hate.
I am confused by the chaos and rush but mostly at the snowballing episodes of madness each December...once it seemed so simple, cards exchanged, two words spoken "Merry Christmas'...those days are gone, far gone...and the little sweet babe Jesus is buried underneath torn green and red paper, empty bottles and masses of leftover and often wasted food.
There are no breaks on this runaway Christmas train, it goes faster and faster on the tracks of greedy department stores manipulation...round and round it goes tooting its crazy whistle and us poor souls inside grow dizzy from the ride,we hold on tightly trying not to fall, trying not to scream out: 'why?'why?why?
I just think it has become a circus and that sweet little babe in the manger deserves more of quiet, holy silence and less of noisy clowns.
I guess I have become scrooge.Never-the-less...Merry Christmas to all.
