Tragedy Remembered... 9/11/2008 7:44:32 AM
On the anniversary of 9/11, my thoughts turn to tragedy, chaos, and fear...But also toward regeneration, rebuilding and rebirth.
On that day seven years ago, I can still recall every moment---before and after---as many do, I'm sure. My eldest son was visiting from Europe and had spent part of the morning relaxing in his newly created "Beer Garden"...I had been through my usual routines of coffee, straightening up, and spending time on the computer, writing...
I took a break to go to the Post Office to pick up the mail. Idly turning on the radio, I heard the remnant of a broadcast and concluded that there had been some kind of plane crash in New York. But as I listened, of course, I learned the horror of what had happened.
And then over the next several days, countless broadcasts were aired and repeated...ad infinitum. Almost to the point of saturation.
I had been anticipating a visit with an old college friend in Nevada City, CA, but almost changed my plans. I decided to go anyway. She was the friend who became the basis for one of my characters in several of my novels, but especially spotlighted in "Miles to Go"...Gia.
We tried to focus on other things. Visiting, shopping, eating out...But at the end of each day, we found ourselves glued to the television set, watching the endless portrayals of tragedy...
Now, all these years later, I still recall those moments, as if they are preserved in a time capsule...Coming home from the Post Office and commiserating with my son; deciding not to postpone my trip; enjoying as best I could the reunion with my old college friend...
And finally, what eventually transpired in the years afterward...Creating and publishing my novels, a memorial to nostalgic times; moments filled with hope for the future.
