Suburban couples plunge into activism to save their neighborhood... Hours later, the party guests had departed and all that remained was the mess. And the three couples.
They had met six weeks earlier on an ordinary evening, just like so many before. Perhaps it had been slightly more hectic, Carly recalled, thinking of her toddler Shannon clutching at her knees as she tried to finish cleaning the kitchen, while four-and-a-half year old Sean whined in that tone that nearly drove her crazy. Luckily, Kirsten had been in her room doing homework, like always; Carly was thankful every day that her eight-year-old child from her first marriage created so little chaos. But then she worried about that. What if she were secretly hiding her anxiety and someday it all came exploding out?
Sean’s whine had escalated to a dull roar just as the doorbell rang.
“Can you get that, honey?” Frustrated, Carly had called out to David, who seemed totally engrossed in grading papers on the kitchen table.
As if yanked back from another universe, he glanced up with that irritated frown he seemed to wear more and more. But then he pushed aside his work and headed toward the door.
She couldn’t imagine who would be coming by unannounced. Neither of them had family in the area, and the few friends they had would have called first. Idly she strained to hear the conversation, but the words eluded her. Wondering why it was taking so long for David to get rid of the salesman, or whoever was at the door, she hastily dried her hands and steered Shannon and Sean down the hallway to the room the two of them shared. She turned on the small TV to a favorite cartoon, whispered soothing words, and then hastened into the living room.
She saw two couples standing in her living room holding a clipboard.
