Volunteer work can be fun and interesting. On Sunday, I went to a local historical museum not far from my home to meet with one of the lady historians there to have a chat about my offering my skills on a volunteer basis to the museum.
It was a lovely meeting, including a tour of the little country house and barn converted into a home for artifacts, memorabilia and records of the local district. Both the indigenous Australian and the descendants of European settlers are represented by the museum.
I love history. I especially love Australian History, and am planning to do a study course on Australian History in 2009.
I was excited to learn that the museum will also be running workshops next year on "exhibition" which I will be thrilled to take part in.
Since leaving the workforce due to ill health a little over two years ago, I had not felt well enough to do anything outside of my own writing, which I can do from home, so this is my first cautious step into including some extra activities that will take me outside the home for a few hours once a week.
I am looking forward to my first day on Friday when I will begin by assisting with some data entry of historical records onto the museum computers.
I don't think I will ever be able to hold down a job anymore, but finding something to keep me interested and give me something to think about will be a huge boost to my mood.
