why do we hate Mozart so? 7/1/2003 3:22:35 AM
Mozart's life and work transmits and teaches the potential of love and harmony with all things. We almost universally opt for the post-Romantic easy polarisation between right and wrong, good and evil. It is much easier, much safer. It makes our lives much simpler to label our enemies as evil and our selves as good and right. An alive circular view of self and of history like what Mozart's music teaches is unbearable. Mozart hate and rejection is almost Universal but is ingeniously veiled! His love of all things, beyond good and evil we label as immoral.
His making fun of certainty and conventional morality,(Cosi fan tutte) we translate as superficiality, irresponsibility and childishness.
His terrifying works, like the piano concerto in D minor and Don Giovanni and the Mass in C minor, we "dismiss" as polished, classical masterpieces.
His extremely revolutionary "Marriage of figaro" one of the most pertinent works in human social evolution, re-introducing ordinary men and women into the center of history, when automatically we were trained to read history as that of king's and princes,despots and soldiers. We dismiss this far reaching breakthrough as we label"The Marriage of Figaro" as a masterpiece for the boudoir and for entertainment.
What a way to vent our rejection and aggression! veiled under all these deadly WORDS of praise and adulation. Our consistent failure to perceive that Mozart presents the same challenge as Jesus, Ghandi and Osiris, is not a surprise.
Our current civilisation roundly and squarely rejects the challenges of Jesus, Ghandi and Osiris without batting an eyelid! The most glaring example is how we have introduced and condoned mechanised mass impersonal killing as an instrument of peace, protection and conflict resolution!as though this killing was permissible and even blessed by religion and religious morality.
