Tuesday, May 26th, 2009, I will be on Douglas Street doing my research for the next book, "City of Gardens: The Invisible Society." The book so far has three interviews of one survivor and two community leaders working towards ending homelessness in Greater Victoria. Now, it comes to the meat and potatoes.
I must say that this book is far more interesting than the last. I am very excited to take my work to the street and see the world for what it really is.
My friends on the street will put faces to the facts, figures and statistics. Their blood will be in the ink. Their voice will finally be heard. They will not die without a fight. I will not let that happen again.
This is real people with real pain. To understand this, you must feel it yourself. This book will spread their message accross the globe.
The least society can do is stop and listen to them. The stars of the book series are the street people. They have fought long and hard just to see another sunrise. Some don't want to remember the day before and you cannot blame them for that. No one wants to hurt and neither do they.
It is nothing more than plain survival. Society believes that it is barbaric. If society had to live under those circumstances they would be no different than those who are there now.
We must find them permanent housing, a place to hang their hat. Shelters are a crock. They need real homes. We have to start with basics. They need food, shelter and clothing. It is our responsibility to give it to them, no strings attatched.
When I go to the streets on Tuesday, my main mission is to relay the truth to society. It is up to society to listen.
