Self-Publishing Stigma?

I was on Linked-In the other day and we had a nasty debate about whether or not self-publishers were real authors. I don't have a book published, self-published or traditionally (not yet, anyway) but I do review books of all types from self-publishers to traditional books from new and bestselling authors, so I thought I had a pretty fair seat in the debate since I didn't have a horse on either side.

In the end, however, it didn't matter, because the arguments for and against were all about ego and ideals and were impossible to prove in any practical sense, so everyone just started getting silly and, in some cases, mean.

For me, I understand both sides of the argument and, more importantly, I'm aware of the stigma because I hear it from self-published authors every day who are looking, sometimes begging, for any kind of review or other attention.

But other than poets, who, let's face it, pretty much have to self publish or perish in a country where only 8% of Americans read poetry, I was thnking that maybe things were starting to turn in favor of SP for novelists, thanks to technology and PODs and eReaders, etc. And I wanted to have a real conversation about it, but that seemed impossible on linked in.

So if you're a self-published author, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the new technology that's helping more writers become published authors and if you feel the stigma is finally starting to fade away. Has your experience been positive or are you still having to defend yourself and your work in mean-spirited debates like the one we had on Linked in?
