Networking has changed over the years. It used to revolve around fact to fact meetings at a convention or meeting of a club or organization. Today, you can develop a network without leaving the office and you can reach more people too.
Here are ways to build a network on the Internet:
1. First, what is your goal? Do you want to find like-minded colleagues with whom you can exchange information or do you want to find potential customers? Maybe you want both.
2. Make a list of steps you'll need to go through to contact those you want in your network.
3. Create a web presence by setting up a website or blog and beginning to communicate with others.
4. Join social media sites , such as Twitter, that will facilitate finding colleagues and potential customers. You could join Twitter and/or Facebook to help send people to your website or blog.
5. Become active on the Internet. Communicate with others and post about your topic, so your business or topic of interest will come up when people search for it.
6. Be generous with information and with your time. Respond to comments made to your blog posts. Be helpful to others when they contact you.
One of the keys to successful networking is to make it a mutual endeavor. Don't make it only about meeting your goals and you will find lasting relationships.
