Energising the right side of the brain 5/10/2011 6:55:20 AM
The left side of the brain controls order - lists, agendas - while the right side controls creativity.
Sometimes the left side is so controlling that creativity is swamped, so how do you get the right side to function? Getting to grips now with the expanded plot, but have discovered that the best way to enable my creative juices to flow is to settle down to half an hour’s meditation first. When I can relax, it helps to turn off the left side of the brain – that bit that’s always occupied with order and lists and agendas – and allow the deeper, more creative thoughts of the right side of the brain to surface.
Although I need to use both sides of the brain for a balanced outcome and the left side is essential for mapping out each chapter, sometimes it can get in the way of my imagination and put a full stop to the construction of a good plot.
The outline of the plot has been around for a while. Today I managed to put some meat on the bones, but have not yet worked out a satisfactory conclusion to the tale – always my most difficult part. I have my characters so I know who the murderer is and how the murder was perpetrated, but have not yet decided how to bring the murderer to justice.
I could do it purely on forensic evidence, but that doesn’t sound very exciting. What I really want, is for the hero or heroine to have a brilliant idea and follow it through at great personal danger. Trouble is, haven’t yet found the brilliant idea!
Oh well. Another meditation and another day, and who knows what will transpire?
Meanwhile, I’ve been proof-reading a non-fiction book for a friend, and found it both interesting and rewarding. Really hones the writing skills to proof read someone else’s work, so it’s been a valuable experience. It was a good book, too, and well worth the effort.
