So far all my books have been published in the US; the novels by one publisher, the short stories by a different publisher.
All the books have been produced to a very high standard which delights me, but living in the UK has raised some difficulties. I am unable to promote the books myself in the US, and this has affected sales over there. Buying the books direct from the publisher is much more lucrative for me, but no one in the UK buys direct because of the high costs of postage. Naturally, folk buy from Amazon UK, which offers the books at discounted rates and with free postage. Not that I mind, I'm just glad to see them bought, but as the author, I do rather lose out.
So I've been searching for a UK publisher, but I want a publisher who will transact business online. I've discovered that many publishers insist on hard copy before they will even read a manuscript, and some refuse to return the copy when they reject it. All this is extremely time consuming and expensive, to say nothing of the damage to the environment of using reams of paper (literally. One novel takes about a ream because everything is double spaced), oceans of printer ink, and the environmental cost of transportation.
Insisting on an internet publisher limits the field, but hooray! I've actually had a publisher ask to read the full manuscript.
Obviously this doesn't in any way mean that the manuscript will be accepted, but at least I feel it's getting a fighting chance.
