There have been times when I feel the magic of the universe and I know you have, too. No, I'm not talking about the sleight of hand kind of magic, where the magician makes a rabbit pop out of a hat. This magic is a deep sense, an energizing feeling that something is right and working with you or through you. You feel a purpose, a partnership with the universe.
I'm going to give you a couple of examples of serendipity, which is a very powerful magic --and just one of our many gifts from the universe -- to help you understand:
** There have been times when, for some reason, you're running very late. You're rushing to be somewhere and you suddenly realize, you have to stop at a store for something first. You think, "I'm SO late! PLEASE let me find a parking space!" You pull into the parking lot and there's a parking spot right near the door.
** Your car suddenly starts making a terrible noise and you need to get it looked at. The garage where you usually take it is good and it's always busy. Appointments are made weeks in advance. You pick up the phone to make the call anyway and, as it's ringing, you think, "I've GOT to get the car fixed! PLEASE have an opening!" When they answer and you tell them about the noise, they have a sudden, uncharacteristic cancellation and they can fit you in immediately. I can almost see you nodding your head as you read this. Well, my friends, that's the magic ...
Here's another example of the magic. My partner, Robert, planned a multi-class reunion that took two years to put together. At times in spite of insurmountable problems . He often spoke of feeling the magic as he was planning it. Things just seemed to fall into place, against the odds, as thought they were supposed to. Robert called it a feeling that what was coming together was something very special. He felt, more than he knew, that it would not only bring people together, some had not seen each other for almost five decades, but it would also open hearts to the same magic he had been experiencing for two years. Having been in attendance at the reunion, I can vouch for the magic -- everyone who was there felt it. That same reunion brought us together again, too -- yeah, it was magic.
As a writer, there have been times when I've experienced the magic. The writing came so easily, almost like it was coming from somewhere else, somewhere outside of me. One time in particular, I was in a place, a space, where the energy was flowing through me and the writing just came through my fingers, like magic. When I stopped and read what I had written, the theme was so unlike what I normally write -- this poem was about a child looking down from heaven and talking to her parents. Even though it was out of character, I had a strong feeling about it and the publisher included the poem, (Letter From Heaven, Page 56), in my first book. I wasn't to understand the significance of the poem until years later.
Exactly three years later, I was invited to do a huge school visit in Circleville, Ohio. Seven area schools were bused in to one central school over a three-day period. I gave five presentations each day, and oddly, I kept feeling this sense of something special at work. It all went very well and I formed some wonderful friendships with the teachers and the librarian there. (To this day, Circleville is one of my favorite schools that I've ever visited).
Two weeks later, I got a distressing email from the librarian at the main school. One of the students, a second grade girl named McKenzie, had been killed in an auto accident while riding with her mother and her little brother. The librarian wanted me to know that this little girl had loved the poem about the child in heaven. She carried my book with her everywhere and read the poem over and over to everyone -- teachers, students, parents, and even her grandparents. McKenzie told everyone that she was the angel in the poem --and she was going to die, but she wasn't afraid.
I was stunned when I read the email. I immediately called the school to talk with the librarian, who shared so much more with me. McKenzie's mother would be okay, but her little brother was in critical condition and still in the hospital. The little girl's parents had copies of Letter From Heaven printed out on pink paper which they handed out to everyone who attended any of the viewings at the Funeral Home.
I finally knew why, three years earlier, I was given the words to write such an unusual poem. There was a higher purpose, the universe was working through me, and I was just not privy to it at that time. That was the magic at work.
I wrote to the little girl's parents and grandparents. I wanted them to know how deeply I felt their loss. I also needed them to know that nothing had ever touched me so personally. Then the magic continued when her mother got my letter, she called. She asked for my permission to have the poem, Letter From Heaven, etched onto her monument. I have never felt so humbled as I did at that moment.
This is when I first began to sense how the universe works. There's always a purpose to everything, even if we don't know what that purpose is. We're all connected and the energy from the universe flows through us like a river and everything is exactly as it should be. When we feel the energy and allow it to guide us, this is ... the magic.
