I keep discovering new websites - mainly by links or blogs from other people - and if they're about writing and they're free, I generally join.
The received wisdom I've accumulated so far tells me that the greater and more widespread my presence on the web, the more chance I have of selling my books.
It all makes perfect sense, but I've hit a snag. Well, more than one snag, actually.
All these websites are different. They all have different rules, and different ways of arranging my work, and I'm finding the learning curve almost more than I can manage - and I'm not that bad on the internet!
The most recent site, Hubpages, allows me to write articles or short stories or whatever I like, and it has a massive following. But boy, is it difficult! There are screeds of instructions but I still can't quite work out whether each new article requires a new hub, or whether once you have decided on your hub, everything you write collects under that heading. Then you can earn money on your hub with various affiliate programmes - you know the sort of thing. But again, none of this is particularly easy to set up, so the whole thing is extremely time consuming.
I've recently also joined StumbleUpon - no idea yet what I'm doing there - Wise Words, and Savvy Authors. The trouble is, with a couple of blogs, keeping up the social networking sites like Facebook and Linkedin as best I can, writing a new novel, and the freelance writing work I do, I simply can't find time to keep all these new presences up to date.
Not sure what to do about all this, but I think in the end I shall settle for my website and blogs, and showcasing my work here on Authors' Den. Don't know about you, but I think this site is terrific. I've been very impressed with the amount of traffic which flows here.
Or perhaps I'll start yet another site, suggesting the best sites for those of us with limited time and limited resources...
