I remember...... As I look back almost 36 years ago and remember my close to 15 years of sea duty I have many remembrances,
but the one thing that stirs me most would be whenever my ship was steaming along the coast of a foreign shore
in the wee morning hours waiting for the
incoming tide to enter port for some liberty
after a long operational period at sea. I'd step out on the deck of my Navy destroyer for a cigarette and a cup of coffee sometime after midnight and before sunrise to be greeted by the lights of the houses and buildings on shore twinkling invitingly as we steamed along, patiently waiting to enter port. We had often been standing watches in port and starboard sections - 6 hours on and 6 hours off - and although we were dog tired the thought of liberty in some exotic far east Asian port had us alert and excited, ready to head ashore as soon as the first brow went over from our ship to the pier.
