Some trips are simply more than you anticipated and well worth the time. Just returned from Puerto Rico. What an interesting trip. The people are quite friendly and really down to earth. No pretensions, no arrogance, just a real atmosphere of life in its most natural expression. We especially enjoyed "Old San Juan," which takes you back in time. The old spanish architecture of the historical sites and buildings were a delight to see. The wonderfully preserved " San Felipe Del Morro Castle," which was the bastion protecting the entrance to the island was so intriguing to explore. This tour of the old fort was worth the trip itself. We did not rent a car. We used the bus from where our hotel was to get to Old San Juan, which meant traveling with the locals as they went to and from work, and to shop and to take care of their business. This gave us a chance to rub shoulders with the people of Puerto Rico and even get acquainted with some of them. The final stop when we reached the old city, allowed us to board a "free trolley" which gave us a tour of the city. What a pleasant surprise! I can't recall any country I have ever visited that provided a free trolley for you to explore any of their cities. Later when we would return to the main tourist hotels along the beach, we could easily walk to the beach and enjoy the ocean view. There is much more I could say about our visit to Puerto Rico, but I will leave it to you to investigate what the island has to offer on your own.
