This is our review of the Fourth Chapter of “First Light / The Second Expedition” in the “Yah and the Space Cadets” series. This blog is published weekly in English and Spanish and is made up of three brief sections: a comment, a summary and an excerpt. The comment section also serves as a sort of glossary where we clarify some concepts; for example, in Zorec (main planet and capital of the Empire) the weeks have ten days; a month has three weeks, etc. We welcome your input and sincerely hope you enjoy our blog. Feel free to collect the letters of the alphabet. Reminder: This series is meant for children (7+), teens and everyone interested in space adventures and science fiction.
Yah and the Space Cadets / First Light / The Second Expedition
Comment: “Parallel Civilizations” are downright evil but, in order to triumph, they mimic another civilization that, generally speaking, is kinder and great, this is the case of the Mayevils. Suchja and Dran are two of the forty Tesgans (warriors) that accompany the expedition.
Summary of Chapter 4 – A Parallel Civilization
The cadets, along with Tesgans and Watchers, enter a grotto in a mountain near the site where they landed. Mona suspects that the cave is artificial due to the lack of stalactites and stalagmites. They find out that at one point there was a parallel civilization on planet Amb-40 known as the Mayevils. The expedition spends the night inside the cave. The explorers are going to an octagonal room. They find small fruits similar to peaches. These fruits give the cadets the power of transformation, allowing them to become anything they wished from air, dust and vapor to plants and animals. On their way back, they detect a passage and follow it. They find a door blocking the passage. Yah and Alph transform themselves into dust and pass underneath the door. After moving a lever, Suchja and Dran, who were guarding the entrance, are approached by some terrifying creatures, namely evil sprites and Mayevils. Their leader was threatening Suchja but Gab and Alf showed up to rescue them with swords of fire. The intruders left in a hurry pursued by Gab and Alph. The cadets return to their campsite.
Excerpt: Ahead of the group was this horrifying creature, an evil sprite, of course. He looked at both, Suchja and Dran, with intense, absolute hatred. He was defying them; he wanted Suchja and Dran to attack first, but they would not respond. They were keeping an eye on all the other creatures. There were several sprites, and members of the so called ‘extinguished’ civilization, living members of the Mayevils.
The sprite in charge got closer to Suchja and looked straight into her eyes as if wanting to hypnotize her. She returned the stare; she was not backing down. Tesgans stay their ground. The sprite opened his mouth and inside his throat he showed flames. He made a growling sound and then he heard something, he turned to see what it was and under an absolute panic he began to run away followed by his entourage. Almost instantly, Gab and Alph flew out of the passage and made a tight turn to pursue the fleeing group with absolute intent to catch them.
“Did you notice the swords of Gab and Alph?” asked Dran completely astonished.
“No,” answered Suchja. “I didn’t even know who they were. Why do you ask?”
“Because they were fiery, they were like torches and flames. I had never seen anything like that before. I thought they had regular swords like ours,” continued Dran.

Esta es nuestra reseña del Cuarto Capítulo de «Luz Primera / La Segunda Expedición» de la serie «Yah y los Cadetes del Espacio». Este blog se publica semanalmente en inglés y español y tiene una o más ilustraciones y tres secciones breves: un comentario, un resumen y un extracto. La sección del comentario sirve también como una especie de glosario donde aclaramos algunos conceptos; por ejemplo, en Zorec (el planeta principal y la capital del Imperio) las semanas tienen diez días; un mes tiene tres semanas, etc. Agradecemos sus comentarios y sinceramente esperamos que disfruten de este blog. Yah y los Cadetes del Espacio / Luz Primera / La Segunda Expedición
Comentario: Las «Civilizaciones Paralelas» son agresivas y, de hecho, malignas pero, para poder triunfar, imitan a otra civilización que, por lo general, es buena y grandiosa; este es el caso de los Mayelignos. Suchja y Dran son dos de los cuarenta Tesganos (guerreros) que acompañan a la expedición.
Resumen del Capítulo 4 – Una Civilización Paralela
Los cadetes, junto con los Tesganos y Vigías, entran a unas grutas en una montaña cercana al lugar donde aterrizaron. Mona sospecha que la caverna es artificial pues no tiene estalactitas ni estalagmitas. Descubren que en una época existió una civilización paralela en el planeta Amb-40 conocida como los Mayelignos. La expedición pasa la noche dentro de la gruta. Los exploradores se dirigen a un cuarto octogonal. Hallan unas frutas pequeñas parecidas a duraznos. Estas frutas les dan a los cadetes el poder de la transformación, permitiéndoles convertirse en cualquier cosa que deseen, desde aire, polvo y vapor hasta plantas y animales. A su regreso, detectan un pasaje y lo siguen. Se topan con una puerta que les bloquea el paso. Yah y Alf se transforman en polvo y se pasan por debajo de la puerta. Después de mover una palanca, Suchja y Dran, que estaban de guardia a la entrada, ven que ciertas criaturas horripilantes se les acercan, eran espectros malignos y Mayelignos. Su líder estaba amenazando a Suchja pero Gab y Alf llegaron para rescatarlos con espadas de fuego. Los intrusos salieron disparados siendo perseguidos por Gab y Alf. Los cadetes regresan a su campamento.
Extracto: Al frente del grupo se hallaba una criatura horripilante, un espectro maligno, desde luego. Los miró a ambos, a Suchja y a Dran, con un odio intenso, absoluto. Los estaba desafiando; quería que Suchja o Dran atacasen primero, pero éstos no respondían. Ponían su vista en las demás criaturas. Había varios espectros, y miembros de una civilización supuestamente ‘extinguida’, miembros vivientes de los Mayelignos.
El espectro a cargo del grupo se acercó a Suchja y la miró directamente a los ojos como si quisiese hipnotizarla. Ella le devolvió la mirada sin inmutarse; no se estaba echando atrás. Los Tesganos plantan el pie firme sobre la tierra. El espectro abrió la boca y mostró llamas en el interior de su garganta. Produjo un sonido similar a un rugido y entonces, oyó algo. Volvió la vista para ver de qué se trataba y un pánico absoluto cundió en él y comenzó a correr seguido de su séquito. Casi en forma instantánea, Gab y Alf salieron volando del pasaje y dieron vuelta en una curva cerrada para perseguir con el deseo absoluto de atrapar a los que huían.
«¿Te fijaste en las espadas de Gab y Alf?» preguntó Dran, completamente atónito.
«No», contestó Suchja. «Ni me di cuenta de quiénes eran. ¿Por qué me lo preguntas?»
«Porque parecían de fuego, como si fuesen antorchas y flamas. Nunca había visto nada semejante. Pensé que tenían espadas normales como las nuestras», continuó Dran.
