The sailor came back into the diner about 10 o’clock the next day.
Barbara Jean came out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on her apron. “Well, hello Sailor. Back so soon?” she teased.
He flashed his crooked smile. “Yep, as a matter of fact, I’m here to ask you on a date,” he said.
“To the movies? I like to go to the movies,” she said.
“Nope. Nothing like that. My sister will be moving into her new apartment in a couple of days, and she’s trying to get rid of all the stuff in the ice box. She’s cooking tonight, and you are invited,” he said.
Barbara Jean had certainly not expected that kind of date. “Good. I’ll come. Where and what time?” she asked.
“I’ll pick you up at 6 o’clock. Where do you live?”
She scribbled her address on a blank sheet of the order pad and handed it to him.
“Got to go now. My sister and I have lots to do before dinner,” he said.
“Wait, I don’t know your name,” she called out.
“My name is Timothy Wade Jennings. Most people call me Tim,” he said.
“My name is Barbara Jean Dickinson. “I know,” he said. “I checked you out. See you at 6 o’clock Barbara Jean Dickinson.” He winked and laughed when he looked back at her through the front window.

Funny thing about Barbara Jean. She started out as Barbara Jean, and then I tried to change her name to Sarah Lynn. Barbara Jean wouldn't stand for that. She was sure of herself and her name in the first place. And, she was right. Barbara Jean was the young girl in the diner, and she reappeared years later in "The Call," in my short story collection The Hospitality Connection.
