Choosing a Title Is a Two-Way Street 8/19/2013 12:20:12 PM
Choosing a title for one of my stories or books is a two-way street. Sometimes the title chooses me. I can be going about my business, not even in my writing space, when a great title pops into my head. There is no story to go with it, but I think there could be. On my smart phone I have a list of titles. A few of them are likely to become stories or books someday.
On the other side of the street are the titles that just don't want to be wrestled out of the book and put on the cover. Many times I have developed stories and books with only a working title. I guess I shouldn't chide myself too much for this because movies are frequently shot with only a working title. With my works, sometimes the final title was the obvious choice all along, and I just ignored it.
Of one thing I am sure: titles are crucial. For me to take more than a second look at a post about a book or draw a book from the shelf, the title must grab me instantly.
