Everyone is affected by the peculiarities of their family background, childhood/adolescence. Even if you don't intend to refer to your hero/heroine's family background I think it's always a good idea to give it some thought. Maybe more than "some." Once you do, you'll find it enrichens your vision of your protagonist and influences the story-telling decisions you make. If you really want to interest a reader in your main character make that character as well-rounded, interesting and relateable as you can. Is "relateable" a word? I suspect not, but you know what I mean. In my case, Toni Credella is very much a product of her Italian restaurant-owning family. Her attitude toward her mother, who is dominated by her father, is definitely a factor in Toni's personality and outlook on life. So ask yourself some of the following questions: How does my character relate to his parents, brothers and sisters, school mates? Any close friends? Any traumatic events in childhood or adolescence? So many questions!
