The Pre-Game Post
1/31/2015 2:12:32 PM

This sets the stage for the Super Bowl

Coming next week – The Post-Game Pre

Super Bowl Sunday is upon us once again. I think that Dickens said it best when he compared the day to the best of times and the worst of times in his novel “A Tale of Two N. F. L. Championship Teams”. On one hand, it’s the biggest game of the season, but on the other hand, it’s the last game of the season; truly the best and the worst of times (unless you’re like my wife, in which case it’s Commercial Bowl Sunday and is ushering in the best of times, namely - say it ain’t so - no football season).
Two weeks ago we had the title games. Yes we did! And what a couple of whacky campaigns they turned out (oh, boy did they ever) to be.
In the first game we saw the favored Seahawks pull, with but a frayed thread of a chance left within which to do so, a stunning upset over the cripple led Packers (who prior had been buying and selling them like cheap easy dates all up and down the field and getting lucky at every turn of the screw and/or trick) to earn a return trip to the Super Bowl.
In the second game we saw the Patriots utterly destroy the Colts in what has been dubbed Deflategate (otherwise known as the latest shit to hit - as though within the confines of an elevator - the fan sitting on Roger Goodell’s desk) to acquire their place on the other side of the field.
People are all up in arms just because 11 of the 12 balls that the Patriots used in the first half of the game were found to have somehow become underinflated, as though for easy use in undesirable weather, despite the fact that the team didn’t lay down a rock solid psycho rape upon the tender asses of the Colts until the second half when all their balls were full of bounce.
The Patriots do a lot of things very well, but cheating isn’t one of them. Take Spygate, the 2007 scandal where Bill Belichick was caught illegally videotaping the Jets defensive signals and it cost him half a million and the team half of that and a first round draft pick, when the most he might have had to gain probably wouldn’t have amounted to much. Come on, really, the Jets, deep in the black heart of another losing season. Bill needs to stop opening all these damn gates. It has been observed that everyone else plays by the same underhanded set of rules, but here’s the thing, everyone else doesn’t get caught doing so time and again.
Of course he and Tom Brady deny any wrong doing or knowledge of any air pressure issues. And how would you really notice a little thing like two pounds less football per square inch anyway, Tom?
There are different opinions over how to handle the situation. Some people wanted to see the title game replayed (yeah, that wasn’t gonna and thusly didn’t happen), some wanted to see Bill suspended for the Super Bowl (nope, guess again), some want to see him and Brady fired, some want to see them fired upon, and some among the hardcore elite pro-football heads are less forgiving.
Me, I say let the punishment fit the crime. Force Bill and his coaching staff and his washed-up three time and counting Super Bowl winning 37 year not a spring chicken quarterback to go to New Jersey and perform the voodoo that they do so well there on behalf of gang green. Their most recent would-be victims may be the Colts, but they’ve owed the Jets payback longer, besides, despite their performance in the title game, the Colts are in pretty good shape overall, while gang green has gangrene and cuts the like of which Claudia would be proud need to be made within the organization. As the clock’s spinning out of control and it’s not exactly doing so backwards on Brady’s career, he had better bring all his favorite targets with him over to the hapless side to sweeten the pot.
For the record; I have nothing – yet – against new Jets head coach Todd Bowles (you’ll notice that I didn’t mention Geno and Michael). Time, like so many losing seasons and deflated footballs, will tell.
Have a safe and happy Super Bowl everyone! My money’s on New England. I only hope that they can resist the urge to get caught cheating. Katy Perry’s staring in the half-time show. Here’s to hoping that she has a wardrobe malfunction while French kissing a girl and liking it.
