Let the Drinking Games Begin 3/14/2015 5:45:25 AM
A look at St. Patrick's Day On March the 17th of 18 hundred and 64 Lieutenant General (whisky drinking like it was water) Ulysses S. Grant took command of the Union army, and if that ain’t reason enough to celebrate the day by kicking back with a few alcoholic beverages, it’s also St. Patrick’s Day.
Yep, just in time for spring break to be over for many college students and for them to be almost recovered from their wild escapades across said duration here comes a day dedicated to excessive drinking and immature behavior. So forget the whisky, bring on the beer, lots and lots of beer. Green, greener, and greener still are the shades that many of those who partake of the similarly shaded beer to the required excess will turn before churning out many inspired to exit in a big hurry stomach contents (Leprechaun puke is the best, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes) and fading to black.
Unfortunately for many college students who aren’t yet of legal age and don’t have the proper fake I.D.s they won’t be able to go barhopping and consume more than their fill of overpriced artificially colored ale, but in another year that’ll be different. As of June 4th it will now again be legal to drink at the age of 18, just as it was in yesteryear when I was a lad.
I remember counting down the days or months anyway until I turned 18 and then watching as the legal drinking age went from 18 to 19 and then to 21 while I was powerless to stop it. The horror was unspeakable (but far from unbitchable about, which I did a lot). I tell ya, the government’s always been out to screw me. It’s a conspiracy, at least that’s my theory. There was talk of 25 if you can believe that - just anything to give me a hard time.
Obama made the old argument that if a person is legally able to vote for the Democratic Party or die on the battlefield or vote for the Democratic Party or face a fate worse than death and get married or vote for the Democratic Party that they should be able to celebrate these important steps (being dead or married or voting for the Democratic Party) into adulthood by having a lousy beer in a lousy bar or buying a case of Wild Turkey 101 to give to me, because Lord knows that if enough people vote for the Democratic Party I’ll surely need it.
What we have here is your basic lame duck forth quarter politics at its best.
All I can say is damn his real reasoning for making this play, finally his presidency will stand (or stagger anyway) for something decent.
St. Patrick’s Day shines a bit of a negative light on the Irish people, who I’m sure (occasionally) do more than just drink and fight and have children. Now I’m not one to support stereotyping folks (and the fingers be pointing at you and you and you and you and you), but I have noticed that more often than not the stereotypes which stick to groups of people like glue didn’t just fall from the sky and land on them. Take me for example; I’m at least as much a product of my heritage as I am of my environment, and in both cases I fit many, although I will admit not all, of the stereotypes that have been placed upon the groups of people to which I find myself attached, be it by blood (for more on blood see the attached website, and while you’re there, be sure to check into my blog) or desire or weird circumstances. I’m part English and the English are known for drinking and contributing to literature and I try to do both to the best (sic.) of my abilities. I’m part Scottish and the Scottish are known for drinking and fighting and being weird and perverted and I don’t want to brag but my roots are strong. I’m part Native American (Cherokee to be precise) and the Native Americans are known for being wild savages who always liked their tobacco and grew to really like their fire water once my damn other ancestors introduced it to them and I’m just murdering a beer now and on my way to spark up a cigar and indulge in a snort or so of fire water. And I’m a head banging bass playing bastard and the bred is known to be a bunch of scumbags and anyway, moving on, have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone, and be sure to enjoy some fine green snow on your way out the door.
