Happy Birthday America
The struggle for freedom in humanity is an ancient tale. True spiritual development is the way of liberty yet a liberty lived with a social conscience and compassion toward the lives of others. Always, a mature spiritual person knows it is their duty and mission in life to assist others in their soul journey while here on Earth.
During this Fourth of July celebration of America's birthday, when they declared themselves a sovereign nation, they took time to ponder their life of liberty. I would like to wish the most prosperous nation on the earth more prosperity and peace .
In America’s revolutionary history, no document is more iconic than the Declaration of Independence.
'We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’ most people remember these famous words of the American Declaration of Independence.
But what does the Declaration of Independence actually declare? For most Americans today, the answer is embodied in the opening sentence of the second paragraph: “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
Perhaps no sentence in American history is better known or has had a greater impact than these powerful words about equality and rights.
In the spirit of the Fourth of July, I would like to mention the immortal words of India’s national poet Rabindranath Tagore:
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action--
Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake.
American Independence Day is celebrated on the Fourth of July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.
But July 4, 1776 wasn't the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence which was done on July 2, 1776.
It wasn’t the day we started the American Revolution either as that had happened back in April 1775.
And it wasn't the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence which was done in June 1776. No not even it was the date on which the Declaration was delivered to Great Britain as that didn't happen until November 1776). Or it is the date on it was signed that was August 2, 1776.
So what did happen on July 4, 1776?
The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. They'd been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes.
Celebrations of the Fourth of July became more common as the years went on and in 1870, almost a hundred years after the Declaration was written, Congress first declared July 4 to be a national holiday as part of a bill to officially recognize several holidays, including Christmas. Further legislation about national holidays, including July 4, was passed in 1939 and 1941.
