The Pitfalls of Multi-culturalism Considered
9/7/2015 10:43:27 AM

Multiculturalism (or 'Diversity', if you will) is the favored darling catch-phrase on the leftist liberal progressive agenda these days. Indeed, it has as much relevance to America's own domestic problems as it has to the present flooding of southern Europe's borders by throngs of Arab refugees, but perhaps in a context within which it may seem strangely out of character by conventional perceptions. Why is that? Read and draw your own conclusions.

The Pitfalls of Multi-Culturalism: AKA ‘Diversity’

Dinner sits heavily upon me as I tap this out. The feeling is not unlike that which I would imagine a drowning victim freshly pulled from the surf would experience, saddled by an overenthusiastic but unknowledgeable amateur resuscitator who is hell-bent to save his life, but accidentally crushes him under the weight of his own ponderous bulk.

You see, M’dear fed me a most unusual dinner this evening, something she coyly called ‘Veggie Spaghetti’, and well you might ask: “Just what exactly is Veggie Spaghetti?” (I certainly did.)

I was informed by the barely audible disembodied female Voice, responding to me from the kitchen, that Veggie Spaghetti is a sort of pasta substitute incorporating long strips of squash that assume a weirdly vermiform-like appearance on the plate. Depositing them in one’s mouth is not at all unlike the experience of forking a load of small worms into one’s gob. OK. That’s not really possible to vicariously get either palate or mind around, really, but M’dear seems to have added a tad too much lime juice to this exotic preparation. The immediate result was that some unknown foodly warning system sparked alertly to life within my brain, demanding that I halt the fork-to-mouth process until part of my forebrain fully understood exactly what was wiggling discomfitingly down my esophagus.

It’s already been half an hour since I first encountered this gustatory surprise and I’m still not entirely sure I’d want to consume it on a regularly basis. Fortunately, Mum raised me as an eagerly adventurous eater, using my status as a dependent and hungry child to serve as a pre-adolescent test panel-of-one for a range of wildly esoteric main courses prepared from anything vaguely nutritious that was at hand. I suppose M’dear still mutters Cantonese accented thanks (shih-shih, nin…) occasionally to Mum’s long departed spirit for making me so ‘easy’ to feed.

An hour before dinner this evening I was out walking the small wolf pack that abides with us, the two main pack members being our alpha female and beta male Siberian Huskies, Nala & Sooka. After the usual halt-sniff-squirt check-points that pepper any such itinerary through our neighborhood, we rounded the corner that opens onto a nearby major east-west thoroughfare. There, the intersection stoplight had brought an impatient 5PM queue of cars to a complete halt, each eagerly awaiting a chance to merge with the local freeway access ramp, and I had a chance to gaze critically at each of these vehicles’ drivers in all their array of diverse multiplicities of character and appearance. My instinctive tendency to ‘profile’ (a perfectly normal survival mechanism that all people ought properly to be skilled in, these days) immediately categorised them into older and younger individuals. The ‘older’ drivers, of course, were instantly conspicuous due to the tendency of people age 40 years & above to sit up straight in their cars, while the ‘younger’ ones were equally identifiable by the fact that they were all hunkered down in their seats so that it looked as if a legion of midgets were seated behind their steering wheels.

As regards this latter group, putting the seat back of one’s seat as far back as possible (and still be able to hold onto the wheel) is a faddish style that I suppose is an adolescent way of saying “Yo. I be cool. Gotta sit low, so I am less likely a target than I’d uddawise be to a drive-by shoota” (i.e. not one of one’s friendly homeboy bros fum da hood, ya see), I suppose. I mean, in this extremely laid-back posture, one’s head is so low that seeing over the top of the steering wheel is just barely possible, and looking out of the car to the side is hopelessly difficult. Viewed from behind, typically all one can make out is a headrest and not any discernible outline of a head, where a driver would be.

Sometimes, I’ve noticed, the posture varies when the driver affects a serious yaw to the right, elbow propped on the driver’s center console so that viewed from behind it seems like the driver is actually sitting amidships (with the head again just barely visible and canted to the right). This highly relaxed style is for advanced (far more hip) affectees of adolescent cool, however, and something I would imagine is not to be casually attempted by anyone unused to habituating the hood boulevards on a regular basis. But I digress.

Breaking my attention away from categorizing drivers into square high sitters and cool low, layback sitters, I next began scanning faces to mine the secrets of their ethnicity and/or establish racial characteristics. The assay was, predictably, quite informative.

There were all sorts of different shapes, sizes and racial ethnicities clearly evident in that queue of cars, even in as brief a scan as this one I was making on the fly. Small little Asian house-mouse mothers driving absurdly HUGE sports utility vehicles, morbidly obese Honkies seated in impossibly small Cooper Minis (‘Big Gulp’ in hand), glaring Black guys piloting long, stretched-out 70s era Cadillacs, tired looking Hispanic working men seated in company pick-ups, harried State Civil Service employees on their way home in bland white official vehicles, a couple of carloads of Chicano bang-gangers in tricked out low-riders with painfully tiny, low profile tires (rigged out on blindingly polished alloys that where as big and airy as wagon wheels), wizened blue-hairs all but hidden within expensive new Cadillac Escalades, several roly-poly Krispy Kreme fans in older, non-descript middle-price-range Chevrolets, a few sportscar-menopause older White males encapsulated in this year’s new Chevrolet Corvette (painted bright yellow, of course), and the usual dozens of jacked-up, high-water 4WD Ford & Chebby one-tonners (visually branded by the bass-ackward ball caps they favor that are emblazoned ‘Bud’).

In just under the minute or so that I took in all these dozens of vastly different and totally unlike drivers at that stoplight, it dawned on me that I suddenly know why, given that we presently live in a Heinz-57 society that is amusingly labeled ‘diversified’, we have so much turbulent cultural chaos at present. But I also found myself asking myself, “Could I possibly have anything in common with ANY of them?” The short answer to that would have to be that, well…we all ate food, drank fluids, defecated regularly and breathed the same air. Aside from that, lo siento, Jose (or Josette)! No peas from the same pod amongst all those boulevarders that I could see.

That thought lodged uncomfortably in my forebrain, for it certainly helped explain why we have so much polar group insularity in today’s demographic mix. The thought that no single one of them was anyone I could hope to relate to in a reasonably coherent manner was actually more than a bit unsettling as I pondered upon the ramifications of the PC world of ‘diversity’ that is daily being forced down our collective throats…like an unwelcome dose of Cod Liver Oil we have been told is great, because the worse something tastes the better it actually is for us! Uh, logic from a turn-of-the-century era? Yes, perhaps, but certainly undeniable on the face of it.

Anyone with cultural antennae even remotely closely calibrated to the flow of daily events and interactions among people that the daily national news media sets before us each evening would have to conclude that all is not as it should be in our 'optimally diversified and happily integrated society' (please note strong element of irony here). Yet the powers of the left, redolent with the strength of their liberal progressive dogma, never fail to assure us that multi-culturalism (or ‘diversity’, another pleasantly bland synonym employed to refer to the same process) is the most wonderful thing we could ever hope for, in the America we all co-exist within. How wonderful that some nice Islamic people have decided to establish a mosque in our neighborhood, or that part of it is presently being occupied by a large number of undocumented individuals with strong Spanish overtones. Then we have the several families who evidence all the cultural acumen of a 1930s dust bowl migrant from the hills of West Virginia (they’re the ones with all the broken down cars on their property, interspersed with a few over-sexed pickup trucks on high-lift steroids). Don’t forget the Black families whose kids all hang around together in packs to glare at non-Blacks walking by. Or the model minority Asian families who all look as if they just got back from worship at the local Buddhist temple.

Please don’t misunderstand me here. Personally speaking, I love multiculturalism and I delight in diversity…but only when it exists within a certain unspoken framework of basic understandings and assumptions. Namely, that regardless of where you came from, no matter what your previous background, you are now technically all ‘Americans’, which presupposes certain mindsets. A few of these are that you understand that regardless of your ethnic origins, English is (or should now be) your primary language. And that the whole infrastructure of multi-culturalism’s success depends on a willingness by all to shoulder certain responsibilities, obligations and social encumbrances…by all, to all others.

It does not mean that you are permitted (or encouraged) to reject reasonable acculturation within the American mainstream and prefer to remain tightly clustered in more comfortably familiar ethnic or cultural enclaves. It also does not mean that the assumption that although everyone is ‘equal’ in this country obtains, some are more equal than others (thanks for that wonderful quote, George Orwell!).

If everyone who came to this country (or even those who have been here for a century or more) understood these ‘agreements’ and willingly shouldered responsibility for assuring their universal acceptance, we wouldn’t have half the racial, ethnic, cultural schisms that we today endure. It has, of course, been a bit more bluntly and crudely put before…OK, you’re in America now: be American!, and by that the expectation is usually meant that this approximates behavior that would be right at home in a white Anglo-Saxon setting (since the assumption is that at its outset, America was originally a white, predominantly Anglo-Saxon culture).

While that might be expecting too much, of course, it is not unreasonable to expect that certain sanctions should apply, namely that a certain public behavioral decorum be maintained (a display of moderate manners, equanimous consideration for others and basic, well-intended attitudes being chief among these) at all times.

Of course that is not the case throughout most parts of American society at present, one of the principal sources of social offensiveness being an attitude of aggressive entitlement displayed by a large proportion of young Black Americans. If that seems on the face of it an outrageous proposition, one only has to consider the superfluity of civic evidence that clearly demonstrates and supports this thesis. If it doesn’t seem as obvious as it should be that young, largely ignorant (read: uneducated & unmotivated) Blacks are responsible for a vast majority of violent criminal offenses in America, you can thank the politically correct media for putting a leftist progressive liberal spin on events they report (read some Colin Flaherty, John Ostrowsky, Harry Stein or John Publius for plenty of corroboration of this allegation); otherwise this fact would quickly become clear. In other words, liberal leftist media is helping to down-play the appearance of involvement of young Blacks in the perpetration of social violence and criminality. Add to this the increasing gang violence by street and drug gangs that can almost all be linked directly back to Mexico and you have a matrix of chaotic volatility that amazingly has not yet resulted in open violence and racially motivated warfare in America.

Finally, we have (and this seems to be associated with the prison conversion of gaoled Blacks to radical Islam...a process fed by their seething, if inappropriate and highly puerile resentment against ‘the system’) the more immediate threat to harmonious American socio-cultural homogeneity presented by terrorist radical Islam itself. Taken altogether, and even if one excludes the radical white right’s ever-near offstage reactivity, we have the classic mix of chaotic catalysts that rip societies apart.

Given that Whites were undeniably responsible for the enslavement of Blacks a couple of hundred years ago, and the fact that there is still strong and widespread guilt shared by millions of leftist liberal progressives who feel they must continue to bear the stigmata for this crime personally, the majority of White Americans today have allowed themselves to be cowed into complete docility, despite the obvious fact of our culture having a ‘Black entitlement’ orientation that proscribes even the mildest criticism. In other words, White fear to discuss this problem openly has conveniently perpetuated the poisonous status quo so remarkably that it is difficult to coax anyone to admit publically that they may have doubts about the whole thing.

It is a sad status quo indeed, and one that is to no small extent recognized by a certain number of more evenly balanced Black conservative intellectuals, interestingly enough (including Bill Cosby, until he fell from grace for being a chauvinistic hypocritical sexist). Yet half the battle to reverse this perverse process consists of getting most Americans to set aside their sheep-like belief that Blacks are still persecuted as they were in the past and weigh the objective evidence for themselves (through self-education and reading). Until more Americans are willing to turn their backs on glib, left-slanted media obfuscations and subtly biased leftist ‘infotainment’ biases, we can’t even come to direct grips with the problem!

Very recently, and this ties very closely in with the message above (that multi-culturalism, while a wonderful idea, falls far short in the actual event), the inevitable effects of the violently brutal ISIL (Sunni) war against the Islamic Shia peoples that is ripping Syria apart have started to provoke a major tectonic shift in racial & cultural demographics that, if not soon checked, will have utterly devastating long-term consequences in Central & Northern Europe.

I refer, of course, to the immigrating swarms of Arab peoples from Syria that are now starting to create an ethnic inundation of Europe that is already unstoppable (given the many thousands of those seeking refuge from that war). In a sense, the problem created therein for Europe is not at all unlike that which we in the United States face along our southern border with Mexico. The effect is exactly the same: a swarm of people seeking refuge (for whatever reason, be it political, social and/or economic) from what they perceive to be adverse conditions in their own home nations.

Despite all the recent focus being placed on our own border problem (by Republican candidate Donald Trump), we have yet to see the fullest long term result of thousands of illegal immigrants flooding across our border. The similar European process presently making the national evening news headlines is still in its early stages; already so many people have swarmed to the lower reaches of Europe that any sort of adequate full-halt is now nearly impossible to achieve.

Adding to the scope of the drama is a national news media that every evening thrusts microphones into the individual faces of this ‘humanitarian crisis’, bewailing and bemoaning what the famed radio report emotionally described, when the airship Hindenburg exploded in flames in 1937, as ‘Oh! The humanity..!’ And what bleeding leftist liberal progressive heart doesn’t beat faster to see all those wretched refugees in their frantic exodus, trying to escape their homelands in hopes of finding a better life in Europe?

It was bad enough that Hungary and Serbia were faced with a solid wall of people they couldn’t begin to effectively deal with crossing their borders illegally, but today, when it was announced that Germany would willingly take as many of 800,000 of them as permanent residents, I had a profoundly appalling sense of déjà vu. For Germany, you see, had dealt with a similar, if not exactly congruent situation back in the 50s, when the results of welcoming large numbers of Turkish gastarbeiters had backfired, creating the same sort of adverse ethnic and racial diversity that we are seeing now.

The policy of inviting peoples from a radically different cultural or racial background into one’s nation typically results, instead of a smooth and accommodating acculturation process, in the engendering of polar social antagonisms, adversarial class aspirations and massively antipathetic, micro-economic shear forces in the national demographic. Germany, a nation that has a profound history of maintaining strong belief in the superiority of White Caucasians over other ethnicities, suddenly brought visually & culturally distinctive Turks into their country as a means of alleviating the acute labor shortage (that resulted from the erstwhile ‘German miracle’ of the post war boom). While it helped address the immediate labor problem, it simultaneously introduced a spectacular element of cultural disruption and ethnic class antipathies to a society that had, up until the Third Reich’s wartime use of captured slave workers (many from so-called ‘undesirable’ groups such as the slavs), prized its ‘pure’ and unsullied homogenous Germanic heritage beyond all else. This movement of the 50s was facilitated to no small extent by the fact that in the ‘new’ postwar Germany the socialist left (SDS & Christian Center) predominated politically in virtually all administrative & governmental infrastructure, leaving the European iteration of leftist liberal progressive social engineering virtually unhindered in its efforts to achieve its highly utopian social aspirations.

If the message wasn’t clear then to the Germans, it should have been (and is) distinctly vivid to the French, who granted unrestricted French citizenship to the peoples of its colonial empire (including the Arab nations of North Africa). Today we have all seen quite clearly what that policy has done to France, as the French Islamic population continues to soar disproportionately and displace traditional homogeneity of the original Gallic French majority. Evidence of aggressive Islamic assertion of sectarian ‘rights’ to openly profess their beliefs and exercise their unique form of religious worship (granted under aegis of French citizenship and replete with exageratedly divergent social customs), is evident all about, more usually than not meeting considerable resistance from mainstream (traditional) Gallic cultural proponents amidst whom they have settled.

If these two examples of what thoughtlessly embracing multi-culturalism can do to separate, polarise and marginalise people aren’t enough to warn us, we have the example set by the Serbs, Croats and Muslims in that hellish conflagration of the 80s that almost tore that part of Europe completely apart. And of course, there are many, many other examples everywhere one looks that substantially reinforce the same conclusion (the Jews & the Palestinians, Sunnis & Shias, to name just several).

In almost every instance one may choose to call into focus (and short of establishing absolute dictatorial enforcement of national policies to the end of achieving smooth acculturation), multi-culturalism (or ‘diversity’ as this policy is known in ‘PC-ese’) has universally been an absolute and abject failure. Again not from any lack of fervently idealised objectification, but due to the simple refusal of different groups (ethnic, cultural, tribal or regional) to come together in a mutually conciliatory, collectively beneficial colloquy to cooperate unreservedly and totally in all necessary social and cultural interactions.

And yet…here we are once again, waxing eloquent and euphemising idealistically about the wonderful wisdom and supremely ‘enlightened’ optimism that underlies the (mentally skewed and rationally imbalanced) doctrine of blending races, peoples, regions, religions and social groups together into one big happy family!

Consider, if you will, the fact that human beings are essentially still tribal animals by nature (and history), driven by a gregarious nature that prompts them to seek out their own kind for support, love, social nurturement and psychosocial validation. This despite centuries of pretense that ‘civilisation’ has successfully overcome any recalcitrant human tendency towards regional reversionism. Regardless of the passage of time since the dawn of recorded human history (and it is a relatively brief one, viewed in the greater context of sentient life on this planet), even today human beings instinctively yearn for understanding and self-affirmation by and from their peers. By ‘peers’ I do not mean those necessarily within the artificial borders of any arbitrarily (read: politically) designated ‘nation’, but those among whom one has been conceived, raised, brought up, educated & socialised (actualized would perhaps be a far better term, here).

Traditionally, the vitally essential validation of self has been attained through association with like-minded individuals subscribing to mutually congruent, shared ideas, customs, traditions, beliefs and attitudes…not through association with radically different individuals who hew to totally different and divergent values. Compared with family ties, tribal affinities, regionalized (geographic/climatic) customs and the like as the basis of all human identification, the concept of ‘nations’ is a relatively new, fuzzy, amorphous and highly artificial concept that has itself been subject to a constant flux over the centuries.

The result of this apparently ‘hard-wired’ pattern of reactive behavioral response to others (anyone who qualified as an outsider, perhaps?) in all peoples is immediate suspicion at best and overt, aggressive hostility at worst. Meanwhile, set against these very human traits of outlook and behavior, we have the effete modern progressive liberals who would, in their hyperidealised, near-religious fervor, ignore all that is intrinsically bio-programmed into humanity in their urgent need to pretend that humanity is NOT full of inherently divisive social & cultural heterogeneites, but rather simply one, big, potentially happy ‘family’ (‘The Family of Man’, as anthropological idealists are fond of describing it). It is a favorite game played by utopian idealist intellectuals to assume this dogma as gospel truth and presume to act accordingly, despite the fundamental evidence that abounds, demonstrating this to be an absolutely fantastic chimera of utterly unreasoned fallaciousness.

Today, in our erstwhile ‘enlightened’ modern world, and most particularly (for our purposes) here in the Progressive States of America, we do not have to look very far to see the telltale proofs of this dangerous attitude, as regional and ethnic disparities continue to promote friction on a local level all about us.

One of the favorite citations used by all these progressive do-gooders (at least here in America) to justify their efforts at forcibly admixing essentially unmixable elements is the example of ‘Melting Pot America’ at the turn of the century. They point to this as (in their opinion) irrefutable and conclusive proof of our rightful American nature as welcoming and encouraging perhaps radically different regional, religious and/or ethnic groups to come ‘be American’ (and share the so-called, but actually by now virtually extinct ‘American Dream’). They point to this as a shining example of what America stands for, archetypally and forever more.

In fact, the American melting pot of the late 1800s and early 1900s only succeeded because foreign immigrants couldn’t wait to become Americans, eagerly hoping to achieve complete acculturation at worst and total assimilation at best in their emotional quest to ‘be American’. The fact that most of those immigrants were also of Northern European (white Caucasian, for the most part) racial stock considerably augmented this demographic dynamic, a fact that is conveniently overlooked these days by those who want us to believe that Islamic immigrants (and others with radically divergent ethnic, religious and/or regional differences from our own backgrounds) will all happily join hands with existing Americans and joyfully play the socio-economic equivalent of ring-around-the-rosey together.

Sorry. It ain’t gonna happen, folks. It’s bad enough that America is presently so collectively beset with a profoundly entrenched guilt complex over its slave nation origins that it can’t willingly come to grips with that fact, put it on the shelf once and for all and face emerging realities candidly, unaffected by intellectual and emotional baggage from its past. But carrying that cultural affect over into our foreign policies is simply compounding the problem by an order of magnitude. Again, and returning to the current Middle Eastern immigrant crisis that has beset Northern Europe, pretending that we are all just long-lost, temporarily separated members of the same family is the sheerest of stark raving mad humanist fantasies, and one that will merely work to plunge Europe into even more chaotic upheaval than has previously occurred, in the not too distant future.

France, for its part, is now bitterly ruing the day it decided to grant full citizenship to Islamic Arabs of its former North African colonies. Germany should know well enough from its own dreadful experiences with similar problems in its own past that welcoming hoards of Islamic Arabs into its midst is simply a demographic time-delay incendiary explosion awaiting its completed countdown. The Serbs have only to gaze back to their recent past dalliances with attempted socio-ethnic genocide (against the European Muslims) to see the writing on the wall clearly enough.

Meanwhile, here in the United States, we daily witness our national news network media reports on that particular crisis emotionally bemoaning the ‘humanitarian crisis’ and wallowing in sympathy for those thousands who are attempting to escape the utter devastation and brutality that is Syria’s war, by flooding into Southern Europe. It's hard to not notice that camera shots of small dead infants washing ashore are particularly sought after by media reporters, to heart-rendingly further fuel this leftist media emoting.

From my perspective, the required resolution is clear and obvious. As the world becomes more and more crowded with human beings (given that there appears no way to control or regulate human breeding practices, thanks to universal condemnation of even the most enlightened, altruistic eugenic approaches to our Malthusian crisis), we need to recognize that the time for petri-dish demographic admixing and social variegation experimenting is largely over and done with. We no longer have the luxury of time, space and/or patience to continue to pretend that all these wildly unrealistic liberal progressive ambitions can succeed. It is also well past the time to figuratively draw up the wagons into a circle and maintain rigid and draconian separation of ‘us’ and ‘them’. As regards the United States, we have enough of the disparately different in our midst to last several generations of efforts attempting to achieve a better (at least more willfully accommodating) mix of peoples within our immediate borders…and so does Europe.

As bizarre as many other of Donald Trump’s unconstrained polemics and public exhortations may be, he at least has hit one thing directly on its head: seal off our borders and keep out EVERYONE who isn’t already a citizen by birth or by naturalisation. Any further delay in taking this step will likely result in a complete breakdown of the existing (& necessary) regional/geographic state of separation that traditionally exists between Mexico and the USA. The chaos resulting from such a total breakdown in conventions is unimaginable and certainly unthinkable at best.

Europe (and by extension all of its present nation-states, as poorly as their national borders may have been delineated by arbitrary post-war authorities) needs to close its borders to incursions from North Africa, totally and completely. Unfortunately for the Europeans, it may well already be as late for them to take this step as it is for us to act in a similar manner on our own southern border.

Knowing the national characteristics of many of those European states as well as I do, the thought of the ‘purer’ racially homogenous states (such as Norway, Germany, and a few others), taking thousands of Arabs in amongst them is absolutely appalling, envisionising full well how chaotic the cultural clash will be between the natives and the new immigrants.

Simultaneous with discussing this ominous state of affairs (in the US and in Europe), in passing I find myself taking a sidelong look at such fat, prosperous and well-groomed European nations as Switzerland and can’t help noting that, while frequently severely criticized (mostly due to sheer envy) for its self-protective, near xenophobic cultural stance, Switzerland’s famed regional ‘insularity’ actually sets a demographic example that ironically enough should (and could) be successfully emulated by their neighbors on that continent.

I shall stop short of accusing America of rank amateurism in its failure to deal properly with the Middle East over the past decades (since our profound lack of enlightened foreign policy has contributed greatly, if not immensely, to the present crisis over there), but clearly, the time is well past for any sort of effective resolution to what has become (through sheer frustration & desperation) a spontaneous demographic redistribution of the first order that bodes no good for anyone, least of all for the peoples who have traditionally ‘occupied’ (I say that somewhat sarcastically, since the history of Europe is nothing, if not a continuing succession of foreign occupations by invading armies) Europe.

Let me apologise here to any of you who think that the sentiments expressed in the previous paragraphs are somehow inhumane or even scandalous censorable, but the fact is that (all gooey, soft-shelled liberal Christian sentiment aside) we simply can no longer afford to be either unreservedly altruistic OR unconstrainedly hyperidealistic in our understandings of today’s world. The time has come to embrace the methodology of forceful pragmatism and to adopt a policy of frank determinism when it comes to dealing with crackpot ideals of hypothetical utopian idealism. Clearly the ‘civilised’ progressives amongst us will continue to vigorously deny this  to their death, but…perhaps one should ask (and I for one am SORELY tempted)…’theirs or yours’?
