The Donald Phenomenon

Sometimes I’ve wondered if Donald Trump isn’t America’s latest rendition of the Maltese Falcon… “the stuff that dreams are made of”. Will Sydney Greenstreet ever come lumbering along with his pen knife and chip away the sleek enamel to reveal a fraud? For so many people Trump seems to be their wannabe. With his private jets, luxury hotels & condominiums, golf resorts and casinos, perhaps, like Richard Cory, “…we thought that he was everything to make us wish that we were in his place”. So far, however, he shows no signs of going home to “put a bullet in his head” (re: E.A Robinson). Despite the skepticism of many political pundits, Trump may be a genuine and worthy candidate…the ‘real McCoy’, so to speak. Personally, the more I listen to what he actually says and the less I pay attention to what the Liberal media alleges that he says, the more I like the guy. Of course he’s a showman. In this era of television and the Internet, what successful politician hasn’t been? My major concern with Trump is that he understands, respects and abides by the checks & balances imposed by the Founding Fathers and the U.S. Constitution. Running a privately held company is not the same as running a country…not our country, anyway. There are those who could make a cogent argument that it should be but, for the time being, it is not. It also concerns me that he is more left of center on several key issues than a true conservative in the Reagan tradition would be. Unlikely to vote for him but, I'd be happy to buy him a beer except he doesn't drink so, that's another reason not to vote for him.
As for Hillary, I’m reminded of what Lincoln said, “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time but, you cannot fool all of the people all of the time”. Prospective voters should keep that in mind…this time, for a change.
