It's been awhile, over three months. However, I have discovered something that really grinds my gears. You may have read my article and know that I am no great fan of the UK newspaper The Sun. Recently, I have read things in it that make me think that the newspaper hates the Welsh.
Over the years, there have been some hints but it took two major sporting events to bring it totally home for me. Several months ago, in the rugby world cup, Wales defeated England in what appeared to be an entertaining match. However, instead of congratulating Wales, which is right next to England and makes up part of the United Kingdom, The Sun made the England loss seem like a big tragedy. The way the newspaper went on, England might as well have lost to Mongolia. There were no positive comments for Wales.
More recently, at the European Soccer Championships, the same newspaper greatly celebrated England's victory over Wales. Again, you would have thought they had beaten Brazil. However, in the final group games, England had a lackluster performance against Croatia, a 0-0 draw, while Wales thumped Russia 3-0 to win the group. Again, The Sun blasted England for their performance and finishing second in the group and had no praise for the marvelous Welsh performance. Again, no respect for Wales.
These examples are enough to let me conclude that The Sun is anti- Welsh. The only counter to this might be if England get knocked out in the next round while Wales progress. Then The Sun might become fair weather friends to Wales. That yet has to be seen.
