Time to Scrap the Electoral College 11/11/2016 1:56:22 AM
Is the electoral college relevant for our time? First of all let me clear the air by stressing the fact I would be writing the same thing if the election results had been the other way around. If Hilary Clinton had one the presidency despite Donald Trump winning the popular vote. After all, I didn't vote for either of them.
The electoral college was an invention of the founders of the US Constitution in 1787. Direct voting for the president was rejected not because the founding fathers had doubts in the common man to make the correct choice but down to more demographic circumstances. Remember, there were no cars, planes, radio, TV or internet back then.
All of those things are in place today so a voter from Kentucky can know all about a presidential candidate from Oregon. This has been the case for a number of decades now. Therefore, the original thinking behind the electoral college is redundant. With today's technology, how many votes a candidate gets across the country can be easily counted void of state lines. Therefore, I think it's time to get rid of the electoral college and have a direct election for president.
The problem is that the large states like Texas and California plus the swing states of Florida, Ohio and New York love the idea they have influence over electing the president. They won't want to give up that influence with out a fight. Well I say that's too bad. I'm from New Jersey and I wouldn't change anything I have written if it were a swing state. Let's scrap the college!
