Examples of some of the varied ways to keep your readers reading your novel. First, Why do readers read anything?
The first reason is for entertainment. The best way to accomplish entertaining your readers is to create complex, fully developed characters in the story. A complex, fully developed character is one who seems real. Someone whom the reader is intrigued by, someone the reader may have had experiences similar to the characters' and someone the reader can understand.
The second reason readers read is: After a long day, they want to settle down with a book that will hold their attention and keep their attention throughout the entire novel. To accomplish this task, give the reader a character they can care about. Give the character some human qualities that the reader can relate to, someone the reader is willing to spend time with; which means he or she must be welled motivated. Say for instance a male character in a detective story goes on a murderous rampage, killing not only criminals, but also hard working, innocent people. The reader may not like this character, but they understand his motivation because he may be avenging the violent criminals who murdered an innocent wife and her child, as well as what he views as a miscarriage of justice by people he trusted to represent the wife and child.
These examples illustrate some of the many varied ways you can keep your readers reading your novel. Imbue them with character traits that will grab their attention for an entire novel. Make your characters call to them.
