Cows, Dogs, and Monkeys, OH MY! 10/1/2017 9:27:02 AM
Animals seize a reader's attention and emotion. Screen actors have bemoaned (some humorously, others with ego bitterness) how animal actors always upstage them. Some actors have, at least jokingly, stated "never again." Apparently, animals play a part people can relate to very easily and do it so well actors sometimes feel they are playing second-fiddle to another species. In writing, too, the lives of animals draw people's attention and can open or close their hearts.
I know this as a result of reader response to my India travel memoir, "Moonlight on the Ganga." When meeting readers, whether attendees at talks or autograph sessions, neighbors at coffee shops, meet-ups with former work associates, their first heart-felt comments to me have been about at least two if not all three tales within "Moonlight" where animals were center stage. Unlike some films, in the book, these animals, their condition (good or less so) did not upstage me but in some way magnified my perception and expanded life's expectations for readers. There were magic in those moments which touched and astounded those readers.
A crippled dog munching bones found along the Ganges River? A pregnant cow? An electrocuted monkey? Take a simple sight and know there is more there to see with non-physical eyes and when a writer touches that nuance, you will surprise your reader as well as yourself.
