Will President Trump appoint any African American U.S. Marshals 12/15/2017 12:05:12 AM
Each presidential cycle, the President of the United States is responsible for the appoint of all United States Marshals, United States Attorney, Cabinet Secretaries and a host of other governmental officials who assist the president in managing the many aspects of the federal government, commission and boards Since my appointment as United States Marshal by President Clinton in 1994 I have been advocating for more inclusions of African American as U.S. Marshals. My historic book, "The Presidents Men: Black United States Marshals in America:, depict the appointment of African Americans as United States Marshals by only nine presidents since Frederick Douglass appointment in 1877 by President Rutherford B. Hayes. As I await the Trump administration appointment of Marshals, to update my book on African American appointments, I am viewing the Trump Cabinet appointments of African American to that position and the number is not very encouraging. My research show the Republican normally appoints three or four African American Marshals out of ninety-six appointments. I was in the wave of twenty one African American United States Marshals appointed by President William Jefferson Clinton in 1994/2002. When Senator Carol Mosely Braun, Illinois (D) called me on October 7, 1994, from Senate floor to inform me that my nomination for United States Marshal has been approved by the full Senate I was left speechless and felt this was one of the proudest days of my life. With Senator Carol Mosely Braun and Senator Paul Simon's help, I overcame some huge man-made challenges and obstacles to reach this milestone in my career.
As a black youth growing up on a farm in Pontotoc County Mississippi in the 1940s, 50 and 60s I had faced other challenges and obstacles that limited or overshadowed or completely blocked any of my dreams of a bright future. During the formative years of my life in Mississippi, the thought of receiving a presidential appointment as United States Marshal in 1994 or later returning to Mississippi to be appointed Chief of Police of the Jackson Mississippi Police Department in 2002 my home state would surely have been labeled a pipe-dream
In 2010 after failing to receive another appointment as Marshal in the Obama administration, God blessed me with a new vision and new purpose in life. But first God took me through some extraordinary challenges and obstacles in my personal life. In 2008 I was required to have left lower back surgery, followed by the lost of biceps nerve in the right arm, a 100 % artery blockage, requiring a stent, Prostate Cancer, Kidney Cancer surgery, a serious blood infection followed these challenges. Two additional surgery requiring the fusion of disk in the lower right side of my back to alleviate pain required. After 35 years of being recruited to many parts of the nation to manage police departments and a federal agency, My new purpose was launched.in 2011 with the publication of a self-publish a book entitled "The Presidents Men: Black United States Marshals in America". The previous official book on the history of the Marshal Service allocated two and one-half sentence to the history of African American Marshals and a picture of Frederick Douglass. My book consists of 156 pages of our history. The book with help preserve my legacy and help me educate future presidents and senators on their record of recommendation and appointments.
My biggest concern is that President Donald Trump appointment of United States Marshals will reflect or be worse than previous Republicans Presidents.
