During the 17-plus years I lived in Thailand, people were often commenting about how much the Thais loved children. OK, fine. Yes, the Thai people were clearly fond of and affectionate towards children. But, doesn’t that beg a question? Namely, what nationalities, in general, are not fond of and affectionate towards children? Are children routinely despised and abused in Lithuania? Or, look at those damn Peruvians…god, how they hate children! No. Children represent to us the incarnation of our innocence…perhaps, in most cases, our lost innocence. My wife and I have been enraptured for three years now with the unadulterated joy of our baby girl. She reminds us every day of how virtuous we used to be as children and inspires us to be more virtuous as adults. As William Wordsworth wrote…

“My heart leaps up when I behold
 A rainbow in the sky:
So it was when my life began;
So it is now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old

The Child is the father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.”
