Bald Eagles Again

An industrial town takes a turn toward nature.
Our town, Bayonne, New Jersey, was once an industrial town that processed oil for the Rockefeller family, manufactured the PT109 boats for World War II and was the home of various other foundry and fuel processing plants.
Many agencies, non-profit organizations, wealthy individuals and not-so-wealthy individuals who helped plant flowers and trees, worked together over the years to establish some modest habitat in this city that has water on three sides. Consequently, we now have boardwalks through marshes that offer a home to rare bird species, more fish coming in to lay eggs, more turtles swimming along the waters edge.
I take folks out for bird walks every Thursday. We are right on the path of the bird migration north and south so we have the opportunity to see many types of birds. People who have lived in Bayonne for decades are amazed at what I point out to them. They did not know that nature was anywhere near their homes.
One day, a Bald Eagle soared overhead. That was it. Everyone gazed upward, so faint at this sighting they could have fallen over backward. Bald Eagles hadn't been seen in this county in over 100 years. Now with cleaner water and more protected habitat, we see the return of our national bird, which was once extinct in this state.
