I stand and look at the new ball fields. Two of them.  Within five miles of each other.  The sports enthusiasts of my community are thrilled.  The surface of the fields are “astro” turf or whatever you call that stuff they are covering ball fields with these days.  Fake-turf. 

I’ve read that this fake-turf can reach 105 degrees in the sun. Children and teens could get burned while playing on these fields.  Lights are installed so that games can be played in the evenings when it is cooler.

Oil is burned to produce electricity so lights can shine in the evenings so children and teens can play sports on fake-turf.

This does not seem environmentally beneficial to me.  Why are sports enthusiasts not expected to be concerned about the environment?  Global warming will certainly heat up that fake-turf even more.  And what’s up with all those ball players that toss their water and energy drink bottles all over the park? They don't even get pitched into the recycling can.

I think some education is needed here in the sports world. I hope my humble blog will be the beginning of this process.  Let’s think about it.
