One of the things you learn about addicts is there are often times that there is more than one addiction involved. There is nothing worse than the having the feeling that your spouse is hiding something more than the one addiction and then it gets confirmed. The pit that sits in the bottom of your stomach is like no other. You may think it's bad that your spouse is gambling and causing financial hardship and then you find out that your spouse is also substance abusing. You want to believe the person will overcome their addiction, but when they continue to let the addiction rule them there is always the wait there's more and waiting for that other shoe to drop. You no longer want to talk to people about your situation because you know that you continue to put yourself in the situation because you want to be hopeful and prayerful that person wants to change. Now your significant other is fighting two addictions and possibly more. If the person can't fight one addiction, how do you think they can fight two or more? But wait there's more. . .what if you throw alcoholism in there, which is a depressant now you have quite a recipe for disaster. You as the usual enabler have got to protect yourself from this especially if you have done all you can and provided every kind of support; you may have to take a step back and let the addict finally hit rock bottom. Sometimes with love it is love to walk away.
