High tech innovations such as personal computers & cell phones have resulted in a mass of voyeurs and vicarious thrill-seekers. Voyeurs opt to video tape sporting events despite being in attendance and, worse, record criminal activity (physical & sexual assaults) rather than intercede on behalf of the victims. As for vicarious thrill-seekers, the hugely popular porn sites are an obvious example. More recently upon the frontier are virtual tourism sites which are designed for people who want to travel but, just wish they didn’t have to leave home to do it. Talk about social distancing…how about existential distancing? First-hand experiences are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. The wave of the future will be surfed in a rocking chair.
