What we spend our money on, shows our true values.
Finally in March, 2022, I sat down and calculated how much money we had spent on bird seed. Since December 21, the Winter Solstice, it had been our habit to go twice a week to the bird feeders in the park and fill them with bird seed. This year, the price for a 20 pound bag of the best seed had gone up $10.00. We decided to mix it with a lower quality brand that sold for half the cost, but it too was now $5.00 more per 20 pounds. Yikes, bird seed was getting very expensive! I began to wonder if it made more sense to plant a bird-friendly garden at the bird feeder site.
Fortunately, we got lots of donations and most of the cost for bird seed was covered this season. When we asked for funds to buy snacks for our volunteer park shoreline clean-up group, we got far less money. After all, they were humans and could take care of themselves.
Where people spend their money shows a lot about their priorities. Watching the birds eat seed was fun. Watching people pick up trash (that careless people had dropped) was not so entertaining.
