There are countless marketing experts ready and willing to advise aspiring writers on how to achieve success in the pursuit of their craft. One of the primary pearls of wisdom instructs said aspirants to "identify your audience". More specifically, your "target audience". Who are you targeting? Who are you aiming for? Who do you hope to like your work? And so on and so forth. For better or worse, I've never paid any attention to such advice. At this point in my life, I'm pleased if anybody takes the time to read what I've written. I don't care if they're teenagers or geriatrics, gay or straight, Americans or Armenians, men or women, Black, White, Asian or whatever.

However, that is not to suggest that without a target audience, my work is aimless. I have and have always had a very specific aim. And, that aim is to please myself. If I enjoy and am proud of what I have written then, mission accomplished. If not, then there's no point in writing the damn stuff to begin with. (Oh dear, I ended a sentence with a preposition!)

Just as the antidote to loneliness is learning how to appreciate your own company because if you don't why would you expect anybody else to enjoy it? So, if you don't appreciate and take pride in what you've written then, why would you expect anybody else to? (Damn! Another pesky preposition.)
