Music has and always be one of my favorite pastimes and sources of enjoyment. A lady named Kiki Dee sang the words “I got the Music in Me” I get it!
A lady named Kiki Dee sang the words “ I got the music in me! “ Yes! If you listen to that song long enough, you not only hear it but feel the emotion behind the lyrics. Some songs are just like that and I do prefer them over a country and western tune that is about a bad break up in relationships. Music is my go-to remedy for a lot of things, not the least of which is just entertainment. Music puts me in a better frame of mind when I need to change my attitude. Singing along to familiar songs is like chatting with a friend.
My love of music started when I was old enough to know what a radio was. One of the best Christmas presents I’ve ever received was a transistor radio. The world of music was a world of fun,excitement, and always something different. Radio announcers became like friends to me. As did the artists who performed the songs whose lyrics I memorized.
What is not to like about music when there’s something for everyone to enjoy? You’ve got jazz, country,contemporary, blues, and classical just to name a few. Pop music was my favorite genre a long time ago but now I listen mostly Christian radio and consequently Christian music. My favorite Christian bands would have to be Mercy Me with, “ I Can Only Imagine”, Casting Crowns with” The Altar and the Door”, and Michael W. Smith with” Waymaker”. All three of those artists have made multiple recordings. Which makes it hard to choose just one song.
As a kid, my older siblings had record players and stereos playing almost non stop.I enjoy listening and singing along as well.I make a” joyful noise”. In other words, I will not win American Idol. So what? If music helps me when I’m down and lifts my spirits, it accomplished what it was supposed to. Some radio stations still have a request line for you to call for them to play your favorite song. Donna Summer once made a song called “ On the Radio”.The song tells a story about a letter written to her and it was read out loud on the airwaves. She sings “ They never said your name but I knew just who they meant.” How would you like that to happen to you? Now it would be all over Facebook instead of local radio.
Radio has come a long way since the’70s. Stations don’t use cassette tapes or CD’s anymore. Record players are not in use on the airwaves but some people still play them. Everything is computerized. So depressing if you ask me. Regardless, there’s a lot to be said about “ old time” radio or what we call the” golden age” of radio. Radio dramas were and are the best! When radio was king. Life was simpler and the age of radio helped cultivate a better imagination than with TV.
