The Writing Life

Once you are possessed by the writing life, you just can't give it up! You must go all the way with it, to the end.
I got interested in writing at the age of 16 after having read Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations. Then I read Oliver Twist. To think you could change the world by writing! I was possessed.
I've been writing all my life. When I was young, I wrote poetry. As I got older I wrote articles for various organizational newsletters and small glossy publications. I wrote a birds and parks booklet for a department of tourism, four self-published novels, and numerous pieces which I published here at Author's Den.
Often I wrote in my diary. This helped me solve problems and deal with my own personal issues. This also helped me come up with ideas for stories and essays. I look at writing as the friend who never goes away and is always there to listen. (Even a spouse can get bored with listening!)
I look at each piece I've just written and I marvel that I have just created something from nothing. I built a whole world out of words. I've encouraged many others to keep in touch with their writing. Especially when it becomes very challenging to do so.
Right now, 2024, I fear the world is heading toward a Third World War. This will do none of us any good. We must use our skills as writers to oppose it. At this point in time, we humans should be able to work out problems without dropping bombs. Do what you can to write for peace. All we are saying is Give Peace a Chance! Thank you John Lennon and Yoko Ono!
