Water Everywhere and Not A Drop to Drink

Life on a peninsula during a drought.
Yes, everywhere we look we see fresh, clean, flowing water. We live on a peninsula between New York Harbor and Newark Bay. For over a month, people have been thrilled with the mild sunny days and the changing autumn leaves. Residents of the peninsula city are completely unaware of how this dry weather could put us in a crisis. What drought? The state of NJ is declaring a drought warning.
Gardens are no longer allowed to be watered, yet some sneak the hose out after dark. Trees in the parks are wilting. Birds have fled. Animal tracks lead to the shoreline. But can they drink the salty water coming from the Atlantic ocean?
Forests are on fire. The air we breath is worse than the usual fumes of jets from the airport and diesel smoke from the ships and trucks. This is America, we don't have bad things happening to us. Our excesses and exploitations of the environment are for other people to suffer. Not us. But maybe this time, we'll suffer too.
