"Spirit Drainers"
1 Comment - Show Original Blog
Right off smiling at ya on this blog. Are you a trained therapist, counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist? I bring this up only because a non-professional (even out of the kindness of their heart) are not equipped to help people, so yes it will drain your spirit. I have found in my practice there are more "Christians" in this situation (seeking help) than non-christians.
In a bible study I was attending a woman naively asked, "do you think people become christians and go to church because they have problems?" The group roared with laughter including the Pastor.
Reality is you have to leave these kind of people in the hands of the professionals so people do not become drained spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Because you end up absorbing them.
And right off you have to have the ability to assess and know whether their problems are organic (born disorder), situational (current happenings as in loss of parent, pending divorce etc.), environmental (work related perhaps), childhood traumas and the like. Starting by having the client filling out the SF-36 form for simple assessment.
It's the nickle Lucy's of Peanuts thinking life has taught them wisdom, who feel they can help these people. I understand their heart is in the right place, but your blog just showed me and you demonstrated for many where it will get you... "Spiritually Drained"
Best advice you can give here, refer them to the professionals. Understand this too, giving advice to others can get you sued. Not a good outcome for anyone trying to help out of the goodness of their heart.
