A thorough and insightful review of Grapes of Wrath. I have never read the book or any of Steinbeck's books. But I have seen the film and the memorable performances by Henry Fonda and others.
You mentioned handbills. While in Wisconsin, my grandparents struggled with a dairy farm and eventually lost it. I was told that my grandfather wrote many jingles for Burma Shave, but never received a dime for all his effort. Those were indeed, dismal, desperate times for many.
