Funny that you should post this blog within an hour of a discussion I had with someone about validation. I was trying to console someone and, in an attempt to help her understand her inherent worth, explained that we all too often look outside ourselves for validation when true self-actualization can only be attained from within - from self-love. Sounds so sage, huh? The words come easily, but the practice can be all too difficult. Afterall, if one buys into the "Gaia" theory (as I do), then we're all interconnected and need feedback from others about how well we're filling our niche for the good of the whole. So, we wind up walking this fine line between taking things too personally and ignoring what can often be helpful criticism. At any rate, you have chosen a field that is born of seeking validation from outside the self. Publishers make the decision whether we're "worthy." I have never sent anything of mine to a publisher/agent. Maybe I will someday. In the meantime, I respect and admire your tenacity and commitment and I feel confident that, in this case, your work will ultimately be enhanced through your agent's input. Masterpieces often take that little extra push. Stay strong; keep writing.

Go, John, go! I always wish EVERYBODY would agree with me on MY writing, and what I like to do. But sometimes, when I listen and rewrite, the result is a piece I like better than I liked the original. Keep on! And bringing in the experience in the Andes HAS to be great! Eileen |
