This is a great topic! I think that most "inane messages" are the result of our litigious society. I think that lawyers troll our nations emergency rooms in search for "victims" who, through accident or ignorance, are injured by the misuse of a consumer product.
On a tube of Preparation H, you will find a warning that says the product is not to be used orally. I noticed a tag on my wife's hair dryer that warned that the device is not to be used while showering. A box containing a pool toy, a doll that floats, has a warning that states, in large letters, "This toy not to be used as life-saving flotation device". (duh)
As for the "live" statistics, one could also ask the same about "live" broadcasts. Better yet, have you ever noticed that road signs lack punctuation? I saw a sign, while passing though a neighborhood, that read, "Slow Children Playing". I imagine the sign meant, "Slow, Children Playing", because "Slow Children, Playing" just seems insensitive. "Slow Funeral" was a sign I read a few days ago, and wondered if there has ever been a "Fast Funeral".
Well, those are my thoughts, Ms. Carol. Would you like to start a petition to have signs referring to ice on bridges removed from all roads south of Interstate 10 in Louisiana? Maybe it would save our state money, as it would reduce the number of signs needed to be maintained. It would be dumb luck that global cooling would occur, and some lawyer would sue the state for lack of signs, after some poor tourist slid off of a frozen bridge.
