Ana Belen Montes is part of the large community of expatriates and political exiles living in Washington. Like many political prisoners in America she grew up in Puerto Rico where her father was an army psychiatrist. In 1977-78 she spent an academic year abroad in Spain
As part of an International relations program at the University of Virginia.
Her arrest and trial came shortly after September 11, 2011.
