Justice for the Black Knight

Details: Freddie Edwards is on trial for his life, already convicted of murder and about to face a jury who will decide if he is to live or die when he is reunited with his sister, Ruby, and their childhood friend, Annabelle. The two women work together to find a way to raise his spirits and change the course of his life in their attempt to obtain justice for him through the judicial system.
The three friends meet in 1935 when Annabelle’s white family moves near the black neighborhood where Freddie and Ruby live at that time. Annabelle and Ruby bond immediately, their young minds unpolluted with the racial bias that permeates society at the time. Freddie is a brilliant teenager who warms to Annabelle much more slowly because he has been thwarted by white prejudice in his efforts to obtain a good education, but ultimately he learns that he can trust Annabelle and her mother, Daisy. The children’s relationships with each other and their communities take them on a journey that brings them the excitement and adventure of discovering life together along with the comfort and joy of true friendship. Freddie is dubbed the Black Knight by the girls because of his devotion to chivalric principles and desire to be the world’s first “good” black knight. Although they don’t talk about it, all three children are aware that Freddie has fallen in love with his ideal woman, Daisy, and that she is torn by her love for the man he will someday be.
Behind the beauty of the little family that develops around the children, great tragedy lurks, born of the winds of racial bias and hatred along with the desperation of the times during the Great Depression. Annabelle’s father is an racist who responds in demeaning and hateful ways when he learns of his family’s friendship with black children. But there is an even worse example of the horrible danger of bias and hatred unchecked in the form of a strange man who lives nearby, Franklin Brumble, someone all the children think is not only the meanest man in the world, but like a dragon, the holder of buried and fabulous treasure. Everyone in the neighborhood dreams of braving the meanest man’s back yard and discovering the treasure. Through the children’s adventures, it becomes apparent that this strange man has sexually molested children. Ultimately the reader learns he is a mass murderer who kidnaps or buys children, uses them and then murders them when he is through. His backyard is a graveyard filled with the bodies of his victims. When Annabelle learns she is moving away because her mother has become desperately ill, she decides to save the day by being the one who finds the buried treasure in Brumble’s back yard. Freddie, who has learned of Brumble’s molestation habits, tries to prevent Annabelle from venturing into the backyard, but she refuses to listen, intent on saving her mother.
Freddie is arrested when he fights Brumble to protect Annabelle from falling into his hands. The night before Freddie’s trial, Brumble brings the Klan to the neighborhood to try to discourage the children from testifying, wanting to be sure his terrible secret is safe In the confusion that follows the appearance of the Klan, Brumble takes Freddie’s younger handicapped brother, Jerome, for his use and to send a message. There is a neighborhood search for the child during the time Freddie is on trial. The children refuse to back down from testifying, but are not allowed to tell their story in court and Freddie is convicted of assault. After the trial, Jerome’s mutilated body is found and the police blame it on the Klan and do little or nothing to solve the case. As Freddie awaits transport to prison, Brumble confronts him and taunts him with knowledge of the fact that he molested and killed Freddie’s brother and many others. Daisy and Annabelle leave to return to Daisy’s parents’ home. The three friends don’t see each other again until Freddie’s trial in 1981
When Annabelle arrives at the courthouse in 1981, Freddie has given up on life and is represented by an incompetent attorney. She learns that Freddie is being tried for killing the same man that put him in jail in the 1930’s. At first Freddie won’t talk to Ruby or Annabelle and they are unsure of why the killing occurred, but they soon learn that Freddie killed Brumble to prevent another child from being molested and then killed by Brumble. After Freddie ‘s jury recommends that he be executed, the women hire a good attorney who tells them things are pretty hopeless without new evidence. The women go to the backyard where they believe they will find children’s bodies. They uncover a skull that begins a high charged evidentiary hearing to overturn the death sentence. The press hears of the story and the gruesome contents of the supposed victim’s backyard, and the case becomes very high profile with reporters from all over the word attending the hearing and crowds cheering for the Black Knight.
This book stretches from 1935 to 1996. There is a time inversion with the book stating in 1996, then going to 1981, then to 1935-36, then back to 1981 and finishing in 1996. There is a single story thread reoccurring throughout the book set in 1980. The sections in 1996 are brief pictures of the beautiful life that has come about for the characters after great tragedy and suffering. The prologue leaves a question as to whether the character Freddie Edwards id still alive. The epilogue lets the reader know that he is. The section set in 1935-36 sets up the background of the murder trial that is the subject of the sections set in 1981. The sections set in1980 examine the moments when the murder occurs, a moment in time that has sent ripples out into both past and future. Freddie examines his sould as he contemplates killing the old man he knows to be a monster. The love relationship between Freddie and Daisy, that has been a guiding light for him all of his life, gives Freddie the strength to do something completely abhorrent to his values, take the life of another human being.
