As she so appropriately writes: “We can begin by recognizing that tomorrow doesn’t always come, and that by taking time to prepare for our final farewell, we can do something to make a positive difference, and by doing so, we can all realize the gift in goodbye.” Doing so is not yet, necessarily, built into our way of life, but to avoid the void of death, it is certainly precious to prepare ourselves and our close entourage. In my case, I can feel the ever presence of my grandfather by wearing his wedding ring that he made sure to pass on when he sadly departed for the heavens. His love shines every single day through the gold ray of light echoing from the beyond to this very moment. But what is love, you might ask? Some French existentialist, among others, thought that “Love doesn’t exist — only traces of Love do.” Well, yes, love is that invisible strong bond uniting it all, here and beyond, inside and out. Legacy is the expression of our true being turned into an everlasting doing of cosmic proportion.

To be prepared for death does not make death go away. And Ms. Adams adds: “We seem to have bought into the belief that by disguising Death, we can make it disappear. By creating such illusion, we are playing a dangerous game, because when the truth emerges, we feel cheated, stupid and let down.” As she pursues, let us remember the words of another great writer, Jill Brooke: “What the dying are the most fearful of is not Death itself, but they are most fearful of being forgotten.” Here lays, for the universal common sense, code of conduct where one has to be responsible in his living incarnation and not wish for some illusion to be appreciated six feet under. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that you “Be the change you want to see in the world,” alive, and not by some token of “please forgive me” in the after life. In one thought: be good, be a loving human being as of now, don’t wait, don’t put to tomorrow the kisses you spread around, the money you have left behind when it’s too late and when it’s made to be shared with your presence, not your absence. The presence of a smile cannot be matched by its absence, its abstract drawing on the walls of your ghost’s memory.

Subtle but straight to the point, powerful but gentle, driven but drifting are the many qualities of the soft, strong-hand approach of Ms. Adams in creating some sort of healing beyond the grave, between the living and the not-so-far gone. Life and death are natural circles of existence very little known, but our souls — our spirits are what we can focus on with a little bit of practice and care.
