Vampires and cowboys. Seems an unlikely combination. But Mr. Hopkins takes this grouping and makes it into a realistic and very interesting read.
Usually anything with a western setting doesn't appeal to me, but I couldn't resist peeking into the idea of a vampire in the Old West. What havoc he or she could wreak! I was not disappointed. Not one but a whole gang of outlaws, each and every one a vampire or dark rider. Not just ridin willy-nilly causin a ruckus but a carefully plotted story that appealed to the Old West sense of justice.
Milus Clint is the lead dark rider and he has a score to settle with young Christopher Durrin. While residing in an orphanage, Chris has an encounter with Milus that led everyone to believe that he had caused Milus' demise. Our story begins years later, after being adopted by a rancher, Chris' life is almost perfect. He will inherit the successful ranch in a matter of months and has found the girl of his dreams (as well as one on the side-he is a cowboy, after all).
However, and it wouldn't be a good story without a however, things are afoot that Chris is unaware of. The cancer eating up his adopted father's inside is a great metaphor for what is happening as the story progresses. Chris' perfect life soon turns as rotten as well. With the ranch in ruins and his friends and family dead, Chris and his little band of vengeance seekers give as good as they got.
The secondary characters were written just as rich and appealing as the main character. The foreman or segundo, Windy, has a distinct voice of his own that stops just short of being too "cowboy". It works very well for this character. The Indian chief, Dark Cloud, is a wonderful sidekick for our hero and does get to ride off into the sunset at the end.
I was painlessly transported back to the Old West and had a great read at the same time. The ending was unexpected but very appropriate and appealed to my sense of balance and justice. I would definitely recommend this book to both horror and western fans alike. 4 1/2 stars
