"I still have trouble believing that a black African woman wants to climb the highest mountain in the world." This comment comes from Dr. Stephen Mungoma, a free-lance reporter and independent editor based in Los Angeles, California. "Like most Africans in Diaspora, especially those in Switzerland, I thought she would be contented with simply living and making money." says Stephen, an independent book editor and news reporter, who provides opportunities to people to share their stories and helps them publish them.

         

She immigrated to Switzerland from Uganda almost 20 years ago and did well in the business world. She established several businesses and thought life was good and exciting. She did not have to worry about anything (so she thought) until the recession hit. She could not believe what was happening around her. Business went south and she lost hope. In fact she came to the brink of committing suicide. “Was life worth living?” she pondered. It was about that time that an idea hit her. Climb Mt. Everest! No African Black woman has ever dared to climb Mt. Everest. She felt within her being that she was going to be the first to do so.

 

It is true one South African white woman has climbed Mt. Everest and a second South African white woman is attempting to climb the 7 summits to become the first South African woman to scale the 7 summits. However, no black African-born woman has attempted climbing Mt. Everest. Yes, an African-American black woman has climbed Mt. Everest, but to date, no black African-born woman has conquered the highest mountain in the world!

 

Stephen, on a phone call with this lady asked her whether she had money to train and then climb. "I have this desire within my heart and nothing is going to stop me. I have to climb Mt. Everest!!” she simply stated. “The bottom line is that most people have a dream and then they do nothing about it and simply wish they had money!" Stephen Mungoma points out. "They’re not willing to take a step of faith and begin training and believing that funds will be found." This courageous black African woman believes that some one out there will come and sponsor her.

 

Stephen firmly believes that this 42-year lady will make it. From her tone of voice, he senses a determination that is rare and there is no doubt that with sponsorship, this African woman will not only complete her training, but will climb Mt. Everest. In fact to show her determination, she has started training in Switzerland and told Stephen that she hopes to climb the Alps this summer.
