Some there are who say that the fairest thing seen

    The wind, ominous

The first thing noticed was the wind…

Ominous, powerful, speaking, reaching

Creating reaction for all the senses

Now and again subtle, smooth and beautiful

Only to turn violent without notice,

Keening the minds alarm

Deep it reaches down to your core

A power obvious, in need of concern

Heard as a song through the branches

Then as a shriek and crack!

Felt unseen, a shadow of power

Without form, yet brutal, efficient

Seen as a dance, then a quarrel

Between mass, whether seen or no

The tree obvious to the eye

Battles a foe unseen, elusive, unrelenting

Relinquishing parts to save the whole

The desperate act of trees

Against this mighty marauder

How many ages and battles as this

Has the tree, majestic, shouldered?

So spry in youth, now stiff and fast

So the birds watch with helpless foreboding

As there home sways to and fro

With the wind a shriek and holler --

The tree surrenders, sad and forlorn

A century nurtured, enamored

Now lies still

The birds, huddled for this spectacle –

Now fly to new quarters, to begin anew

The wind whistles gaily

No sense of victory – simply driven

By forces unseen, mysterious to trees

Just passing through… heedless, whistling

The birds, holding no umbrage

Now scurry for new housing
