The Treaty of Amity and Commerce recognized the United States as an independent nation and promoted trade between France and the United States. The Treaty of Alliance created a military alliance against Great Britain, stipulating American independence as a condition of peace. The snow remembers my shoulders...

The snow remembers my shoulders
my hips my ankles
I carried it with me a long time
I didn’t even know how
to write yet then

The stars were more courteous then
and warmer
They greeted me
when I went alone
naked with my snow

The stars weren’t giant suns yet then
in the distant expanse of the cosmos
They were tiny friendly
spots of light
that suddenly appeared in the evening
in the bottomless hollow of the winter sky
and looked into the bottom of my eyes
wide open in admiration
reflecting my snow
my open nakedness
that was my shield

Poetry magazine arrived Monday. The hardcover I spent waytoomuch on is on sale-Get it! I don’t buy new hard covers as a rule…I don’t regret buying my copy (note to Powerball authorities: a little advanced warning on when the big check comes in so I can give these publishers a heads up on my enormous order! ) Spoiler alert: 100 poems from 100 years of the magazine? And I have to spend my children’s inheritance[assuming the Powerball guys send my pittance where my wife can’t get it]on copies for my friends!

A lovely poem by Laura Kasischke (SP?),a glorious remembrance poem on the inside cover, and a glossy inside section(1^st time I’ve seen it done by Poetry) on Joan Mitchell(sp?) -poet/ painter.
