Winter Night

An owl is hooting in the grove,
The moonlight makes the night air mauve,
The trees are regular as crystals,
The thawing road shines black as pistols,
And muffled by the quiet snow
The wind is only felt to blow.
Dread bird that punctually calls!
Its sound inhuman strangely falls

Within the human scale; and I
Am forced to place, besides the cry,
The moon, the trees, the swollen snow,
Reluctantly with what I know.
Even the road conveys the sense
Of being outside experience;
As though, this winter night of war,
The world men made were man's no more.

The Lust of the Eyes

I care not for my Lady’s soul
Though I worship before her smile;
I care not where be my Lady’s goal
When her beauty shall lose its wile.

Low sit I down at my Lady’s feet
Gazing through her wild eyes
Smiling to think how my love will fleet
When their starlike beauty dies.

I care not if my Lady pray
To our Father which is in Heaven
But for joy my heart’s quick pulses play
For to me her love is given.

Then who shall close my Lady’s eyes
And who shall fold her hands?
Will any hearken if she cries
Up to the unknown lands

Late Snow

The heavy train through the dim country went rolling, rolling,
Interminably passing misty snow-covered plough-land ridges
That merged in the snowy sky; came turning meadows, fences,
Came gullies and passed, and ice-coloured streams under frozen bridges.

Across the travelling landscape evenly drooped and lifted
The telegraph wires, thick ropes of snow in the windless air;
They drooped and paused and lifted again to unseen summits,
Drawing the eyes and soothing them, often, to a drowsy stare.

Singly in the snow the ghosts of trees were softly pencilled,
Fainter and fainter, in distance fading, into nothingness gliding,
But sometimes a crowd of the intricate silver trees of fairyland
Passed, close and intensely clear, the phantom world hiding.

O untroubled these moving mantled miles of shadowless shadows,
And lovely the film of falling flakes; so wayward and slack;
But I thought of many a mother-bird screening her nestlings,
Sitting silent with wide bright eyes, snow on her back.

Ever wonder how much time I ‘spend’ banging out this daily email? Don’t worry about it too much. I’m retired, and at this point housebound by a physical condition that came as a surprise to my Dr and I. The Dell computer I am using is approaching 7 years on this table (Nobody in the house wants to use it). Here I park my Pullmann, read my e-mail, and study sites, more emails, and the stars (as in Astrology-which is tripe) ,the whole thing coalesces into StraffordNotes.

If you think there’s something new under the Sun, don’t look for it here. It would be copyrighted; I don’t really feel the need to defeat boredom by getting lawyers involved in my karma (not tripe) What I do is attempt to defeat ennui by assembling info in a way that might keep the reader’s attention and thus keep him from leaping off train platforms. Almost every day I will find some poetry, history or biography that is news to me and needs to be spread around. I try not to bore you with my writing…I regard that as an imposition.

Try to enjoy. I love input… “You come too.”
